Get Ready for Groundhog Day!
We're a huge fan of the film so even though we're thousands of miles away from Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania the 2nd of February inspires us to curl up in a fleece blanket and watch it again for the millionth time.
The day itself has been celebrated since the 1880s and until the film came out in 1993 a gathering of 2000 showed up at Gobbler's Knob (excellent name) each year to see whether or not Punxutawney Phil sees his shadow and with that forecast 6 more weeks of winter (though statistically the groundhog's only been accurate 39% of the time but I blame the El Nino effect). Thanks to the film this little small town tradition has turned into a huge celebration with over 40,000 gathering to boost the tourism industry each year.
Fun fact while only 38 separate days are depicted in the film it's estimated by experts that Phil spent close to 34 years reliving the same day. A whole philosophy has grown around the movie, interestingly the premise goes against the proverb "familiarity breeds contempt" as Phil starts off loathing everything about Groundhog Day and Punxsutawney but after decades of getting to know the residents of this small town he treats them like old friends because of the sense of familiarity and after only a day of knowing Phil they treat him the same.
So to celebrate the day that inspired a film that's brilliant on so many levels we've put together a collection of Groundhog goodies for fellow Groundhog Day lovers. Image links to collection on Zazzle.
